The Italian language is spoken by approximately 63 million people. The majority of Italian speakers live in Italy itself, but the language is also the official language of San Marino, one of four official languages (along with French, German and Romansh) of Switzerland, and a recognized official language of the Italian national community in Slovenia. Additionally, Italian is widely spoken in the Vatican City, although Latin is the official language, and Italian is also spoken in a variety of other communities around the world. Learning Italian is of course useful if you intend to visit Italy or another Italian-speaking area. If you are going for a vacation, you will enjoy it more if you can speak to the natives in their own tongue, and it goes without saying that knowing the language is a great advantage if doing business with Italian speakers. Furthermore Italian is something of an a Lingua Franca in certain areas of life - its importance in the Vatican City (and therefore to the Roman Catholic Church) has already been mentioned, but the Italian language is also highly important in some sports (including motor racing and soccer), and in some areas of the arts (for example, fashion, opera, and some visual arts). So having decided to learn Italian, how should you get started? One option is of course to take the traditional route - attend a language learning class. However, going to classes is not an option for everyone - it may not fit your schedule, or you may simply prefer to learn in the comfort of your own home. In this case, your computer may well offer the ideal solution - there are a wide variety of Italian language learning courses that you can get for your PC. These often incorporate audio, visual, and interactive elements, and generally have the great advantage of allowing you to work through them at your own pace. Additionally, it is even possible to choose a course that is delivered entirely via the Internet, which means that you don't have to wait for course materials to be delivered, or for a semester to start, you just sign-up through a web site, and can begin immediately.
