Affiliate programs are a business opportunity for web site owners, and are usually free to join (I personally would only join affiliate programs which are free to join). There are a vast number of different affiliate programs that web site owners can choose from, but on the whole it is generally best for web site owners to choose programs that tie in with the theme of their site(s), and will interest their visitors. The basic idea behind affiliate programs is that a web site owner links to a merchant's site. When visitors click on those links it results in visitors, prospects and customers being sent to the merchant, and thus hopefully helping to grow the merchant's business. In return for this, the merchant pays commission to the web site owner, the amount of commissions being based on the total number of visitors sent ("pay per click"), or the amount of leads or sales referred ("pay per lead" or "pay per sale"). While it is true that some people have done very well with affiliate programs, as with any other business, there is no guarantee that by participating in affiliate programs that you will actually make any money at all. In general, how much (if any) money you make with affiliate programs will depend on choosing the right programs, and how well you market and promote your web site and the affiliate links on it. There are a variety of software tools and downloads available to affiliates, and to merchants who operate affiliate programs.
